A STUDY IN THE SCARLET

This is my first case as a Consulting Detective and this is the one through which my name was spread.  Still, this is unsolved by the official police force.  But, atleast I can near the killer here.  But, ofcourse definitely without the help of the official police force I can't zero in on the killer.  That's another point.  So, let's see through this case.  If the reader's of this post have any suggestion, you can leave it on the comment section.  And, this is the improved version of my earlier post.

This case was started from a newspaper clipping on the evening of a sunny day.  The year was 2018, and the August sun was upon my windows.  It was 29th of August, while I was doing some stuffs in chemistry.  The scorching sun had finally had some pity on the people of Chennai and began to reduce its heat.  When the time was 5.00 pm I was bored, and after all I have completed my works with chemistry.  And, so, I was glancing the newspaper, Dinamalar issue of that day.

And now, while I was going through the doings and the daily works of the people of this city there was some small piece of news in a corner of that newspaper which had caught my attention.  The english translated version is given below,

"OLD MAN DEAD; WHERE IS THE WOMAN?"
TRIPLICANE, AUGUST 29
The police are searching for a Triplicane woman who had murdered
a man of sixty, by pouring an easily flammable liquid on him and
fleded from that place.
Mr. Sayed Bassuruddin,62, belongs to Vannarapettai, Pencil Nagar,
4th Street.  He had taken a room in a complex which is opposite to
the Big Mosque on the Triplicane high road and was warding off
evil spirits for 40 years.
But, on the night of the day-before-yesterday, a lady wearing a Purdah went to him
for warding off evil spirit but, poured an easily flammable liquid
on Mr. Sayed and escaped from the place.  After a few moments, his
body started to burn.
The people who had seen this, had rescued Mr. Sayed and admitted him
to the Kilpauk Hospital.  But, Sayed died inspite of the treatments
given to him.  The Triplicane police had lodged a complaint regarding
this incident and they are searching for the woman who had done this deed.

So, this was the clipping which I have read it in the newspaper.  So, let us analyse the due sequence of the incidents which had happened as mentioned in the newspaper.  The lady was wearing a Purdah, which means she was covering her face and masking her identity.  And the deed was done in the night.  We don't know the exact timing but it should be after eight, I presume because she was going to do a murder, which means there should be less number of people during that time in order to escape from that place easily.  And, the crime was on the night of 27th of August, 2018 as mentioned from the reports.

And, The Big Mosque is one of the biggest Mosque in Chennai which is situated in Triplicane.  The place of work of Mr. Sayed must be in this mosque or to opposite of this.  But, according to some of my Muslim friends some mosques do ward off spirits.  Here is a picture of that Mosque.

So, this is the actual picture of the Mosque mentioned in this case.  And, we know that Mr. Sayed is definitely a sane man and he had not gone out of his mind.  No person will go near fire when there is some foul liquid on him.  So, definitely Mr. Sayed had not gone anywhere near fire.  So, how he was started to burn.

The answer to this question is two-fold.  First, the source of this fire is the woman herself.  And, the second is the liquid should start burning by itself.  In a busy place like a Mosque, there is really less time for that woman to escape after she had poured that liquid on him.  And taking a Matchbox or a lighter and burning him is a clumsy process.  And, after all she was wearing a Purdah which makes it more difficult.  So, how this has been done?

So, let us assume that the liquid has the property of self-burning.  Does there is something like that which starts to burn without a source of fire?  Definitely there is.  And it is Chlorine trifluoride(ClF3).

This certain chemical has some peculiar properties which needs some attention here.  Coming to the due course of events, after I had read this newspaper clipping I had gone to my father's office to search for a liquid with these peculiar properties.  And, the result was Chlorine trifluoride(ClF3).  There is no other liquid in this world with this properties.  So, if our hypothesis is right, then there is a high probability of the usage of this liquid.  Let's see something about this chemical.

The most flammable chemical probably is Chlorine trifluoride, ClF3.  This is a colourless, toxic, corrosive gas or pale greenish-yellow liquid that is so reactive that it initiates conbustion of just about any material you can name and it doesn't even require an ignition source to get the fire started?  The reactions are vigorous and often violent to the point of explosivity.

BURNING THE UNBURNABLE:
ClF3 fluorination and oxidation power surpasses the oxidising power of oxygen, which allows the chemical to ignite materials normally considered fire-safe, such as oxides.  ClF3 burns asbestos, sand, glass, concrete and flame retardants.  Most fire control and suppression systems are ineffective or else actually worsen the resulting fire. Of course, the chemical also ignites human skin and other tissue on contact, producing Hydrochloric acid and Hydrofluoric acid.  Both acids burn human tissue.  Hydrofluoric acid selectively activates pain centers and attacks bone, causing potentially lethal poisoning.

Density: 1.830 g/cc     Freezing point: -76 degree Celsius   Boiling point: 12 degree Celsius

PREPARATION, STRUCTURE AND PROPERTIES:

It was first reported in 1930 by Ruff and Krug who predicted it by fluorination of chlorine;  this also produced ClF and the mixture was separated by distillation.
3F2 + Cl2 → 2ClF3

ClF3 is approximately T-shaped, with one short bond (1.598 A) and two long bonds (1.698 A).  This structure agrees with the prediction of VSEPR theory, which predicts lone pairs of electrons as occupying two equatorial positions of a hypothetic trigonal bipyramid.  The elongated Cl-F axial bonds are consistent with hypervalent bonding.

Pure ClF3 is stable to 180 degree Celsius in quartz vessels;  above this temperature it decomposes by a free radical mechanism.  And during an industrial accident, this acid has burnt out 8 feet of concrete too.

But, it costs $400 for a 50g vial, i.e. Rs. 26,400

So, now some questions have started to revolve around in my mind after reading all these facts about this chemical ClF3.
Who is Mr. Sayed?  Why the criminal should spend such a large sum to kill him?
But, we do can say that the woman, however is just an arrow.  Someone, who is rich, a chemist is behind this.  What would a simple man who works in a mosque warding off evil spirits can do to this guy?

SOMETHING BIG IS ON!

What secrets could Sayed have known?  But, we do know a fact that Mr. Sayed was staying in the same place for nearly 40 years.  As a rule,
"The Complex one's are proved to be the simplest crime"
So, how can we solve this?

  1. Go through the history of Mr. Sayed, his travels, contacts everything.
  2. Collect the list of all richest chemists and check their histories too.
  3. Find the woman.
  4. Correlate all this and the suspect will be caught.
  5. Check the background of this woman.
  6. Probably, the assignment was done for a huge amount.
We can tell that it is a chemist because, everyone thinks according to their professions.  Only a Chemical mind will suggest a acid which is very difficult to find and which is not common.  So, according to the elementary class of deductions the man behind this must be a chemist and that too a rich one.  Who would spend Rs. 26,500 for just 50g of acid to kill a Mosque man.

This crime is well planned since it was done in a night, when there will be less people and a greater chance to escape and here a woman was in the scene who wore a Purdah.  It is not necessary for her to be a Muslim.  If my theory holds good, i.e. the rich chemist theory, then this must be correct.  She used Purdah to mask her identity.  Could be a project for a large sums of money.  This lady must be out-of-station after the deed had been done or must be dead by now and she could have been a experienced one.  And this is a burning chemical which is very costly, so a rich chemist and this is a brilliant idea.  But, the questions are is Mr. Sayed is the real target?  If so, What he could have known?

So, this is theory time.  We have two theories now, according to this hypothesis.
THEORY-1:
The occupation of the lady is not clear.  She masked her identity, crime was on night and she was not caught till yet or a clue.  This leds to a category of a theory, assuming the lady as a professional, done this assignment for a large sum of money.
Covers all facts?

THEORY-2:
     EMOTIONS A VERY DANGEROUS WEAPON.
It is now common for the criminals to use the emotions of the people to accomplish their task.  A theory of emotion is practically possible for this case.
LOVE FOR YOUR OWN CHILD.
LOVE FOR YOUR BELOVED ONES.
Emotions(Love for one), can be used as a lethal weapon, to make a person a puppet.  There is an another theory that the lady was forced to do it, for the villain would have played with her loss, using her natural emotions, if Mr. Sayed had done anything wrong to her or to her family.  She would, of course will be waiting for a chance for a revenge.

COVERS ALL FACTS
DON'T TWIST FACTS TO SUIT THEORIES.
TWIST THEORIES TO SUIT FACTS.

And so, if the real criminal is reading my blog, he would laugh at me for I was completely on the wrong track.  I do not know, how do you all feel?  But, this acid theory is completely absurd.  Have you noticed?  The reactions of this acid is vigorous and at times explosive too.  And, as a matter of fact most of the fire retardants worsen the condition.  So, actually it is not possible for the people around him to rescue, Mr. Sayed and admit him in a hospital.  This was not used.

So, what really happened?  Actually, I need some help from the official police force at this point of time.  First, we have to know the character of the victim, Mr. Sayed. By, inquiring his office-mates and the people he knows and of course his inmates we could easily get at it.  And, secondly, we should definitely do some background research on this victim.  His travels, his recent customers etc...

And, according to his occupation if someone want to revenge him, than definitely it must be a evil spirit and not a woman.  So, there is something more sinister for this revenge.  In Muslim mythologies, fire is used in hell to burn.  And he was burn.  This definitely is a revenge and a cruel one too.  But, we do have some some flattery points in this theory like the difficulty of burning him.

Firstly, burning him is the easiest way to kill a person there.  Using knife is a clumsy process, and that too, there is a possibility that he might escape.  So, burning.  We can understand.  But, how?
On the subsequent searches in the net I found out the murder weapon.  The murder weapon was a lit kerosene ball.

And, we do know a fact that he was living in the same place for nearly 40 years.  Why suddenly his revenge now?  That's because the cause for this revenge was recent.  We still don't know why it had been done or what it is.  But, the cause is very recent to his time of death.  I should put it on two months before his death.  The reason.  So, interrogating the people and knowing the things which had happened during this time limit, we can near the killer.

In my subsequent posts, let us see how I had solved a case before the official police, and the post on the science of deduction and also about black holes.
